Art 8: This is a 9 week course. Students will be introduced to a variety of different art mediums including, but not limited to drawing, painting, collage work, pen and ink, and many other mediums. Students will learn about different artists while completing some exciting projects. This course is recommended for any student planning on taking Art 1 at the high school level.
Fundamentals of Mathematics II: Offered in the 8th grade, Fundamentals of Mathematics II is an exploratory and hands-on class that will be used to reinforce and enrich concepts learned in the students’ current and previous math classes. Activities will be designed to show real world applications for mathematics and may include labs and use of Study Island. The course will be graded S/U.
Presto: Presto is a course designed for 8th graders. This course will explore kitchen safety, kitchen equipment, cooking and measuring techniques, as well as quick and easy recipes. The course is designed to take a hands on approach to cooking in the kitchen. Students will be creating meal components in class, as well learning about the nutritional value of the items. The course will be very active with a hands on approach in the kitchen. Students should come prepared to learn a great deal about food and nutrition in a short time period.
Physical Education 8: The Physical Education program provides each student with the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive program consisting of skill development, lead up games, team sports, and physical fitness activities. The students receive instruction in rules, skills, and strategies associated with the different sports as well as learning experiences involving physical conditioning activities. The students will also have the opportunities to become involved in life long physical activities through individual sports units. The program promotes the spirit of cooperation, leadership, fair play, and friendly competition.
Health 8: Health 8 is a nine week class designed for students to learn more about nutrition. Topics include the six major nutrients, how we can meet our nutritional needs, fast food analysis, food and your body weight, eating disorders, preventing food related illness, physical fitness and your health, planning a fitness program, exercising the safe way and sleep. Students will learn that with the food we put into our bodies and how the body uses it along with proper exercise and sleep can have both positive and negative effects on our daily lives.
Ag. Exploration 2: 8th grade Ag. Exploration will consist of four areas. They include: Agricultural Careers, Food Industry, Public Speaking, and Small Projects. Students will spend 1 to 3 weeks in each of the areas mentioned. Hands on activities will help develop problem solving, communication, and cooperation skills with other students.
Band: The Junior High School Band class allows students to study music from an instrumental perspective. In this class students will study, rehearse, and perform pieces of music of different styles, ranging from classical to pop, and from a variety of cultures. There are a few after school rehearsal requirements for this class, and a minimum of one after school performance for each grading period. Enrollment is open to all students. With the exception of a very few large instruments, students are required to provide their own instruments.
